So today, I was going through the interwebs and stumbled upon this story that I just had to share. Mitrovic, an IT consultant and tech blogger, recently encountered an alarming phishing attempt. After looking it up, I wanted all of us to be watchful, so here’s the insight into it.
The Initial Attempt
Mitrovic’s ordeal began with a notification from Google, asking him to approve an account recovery attempt for his Gmail. Trusting his instincts, he promptly denied the request, aware that such notifications can often be a red flag. However, about 40 minutes later, he received a call from a number that appeared to belong to Google’s Sydney office. Unsure of the call’s authenticity, he chose not to answer.
A Disturbing Follow-Up
A week later, Mitrovic received another recovery notification, along with a call from an Australian number. This time, he decided to pick up. On the line was a polite and professional voice that claimed to be from Google. The caller informed him of suspicious activity on his account, alleging that someone had illegally accessed it and downloaded his data over the past week.
Doing His Due Diligence
Skeptical yet cautious, Mitrovic took it upon himself to investigate. He discovered that the caller’s number matched the official Google IT support line for Australia. To verify the legitimacy of the call, he asked for a confirmation email. While the email appeared to come from Google’s official support team, a closer look revealed that it originated from a cleverly disguised spoofed address, not a genuine Google domain.
The AI Deception
Realizing the severity of the situation, Mitrovic noted another alarming detail: the caller’s speech was unnaturally perfect, leading him to suspect that he was conversing with an AI-generated voice rather than a human. This pointed to a disturbing trend of scams leveraging artificial intelligence to impersonate trusted companies, making them even harder to detect.
A Growing Threat
It seems that users around the globe have increasingly fallen victim to these advanced AI-based phishing scams, which frequently impersonate Google staff and other well-known organizations. If Mitrovic hadn’t been aware of these tactics and remained vigilant, he could have easily been tricked into revealing sensitive information or accessing a cloned login portal designed to capture his credentials.
